DESCRIPTION

Description Adventure Trekking Tour in Arequipa

With the Adventure Trekking Tour in Arequipa or “Arequipa Trekking”, you will be able to know its historical center, the convent of Santa Catalina and surroundings. Visit the sillar quarries, this white and pink volcanic stone that makes it the owner of the title of White City and enjoy the countryside around Chivay and crown your visit appreciating the flight of the majestic Andean condor. This tour is ideal for those who want to know Arequipa inside and out.

The touch of color in the city tour Arequipa is given precisely by a monastery located in the heart of the White City. With its two hectares, this authentic citadel is completely different from the European convents and monasteries. In the middle of the 16th century, the viceroy of Peru, Francisco de Toledo visited Arequipa city tour. During his stay, he was informed that the population fervently desired a monastery, so he granted the license to found the Monastery of Private Nuns of the Order of St. Catherine of Siena.

THE VALLEY OF AÑASHUAYCO, is located in the district of Uchumayo, at 2,120 meters above sea level. The Añashuayco Quarries is the place where the emblematic sillar is extracted. The white volcanic stone that is used in the construction of colonial buildings in the Arequipa region, here is located precisely the route of the sillar that you can not miss.

The Colca Canyon adventure, catalogued as the deepest canyon in America, reaches 4,160 meters at its maximum point, in the town of Canco. It has on its right bank the Chila Mountain Range (Bomboya, Serpregina, Mismi, Quehuisha) and on the other side are the Hualca Hualca, Sabancaya and Ampato. In the distance you can see the Ubinas volcano and the beautiful Coropuna.

It is an adventure of Mirador de la Cruz del Condor, from here you can see the canyon in all its splendor. It is also a strategic point to observe the gliding of the emblematic condor, a millenary bird of great size, which flies through the air taking advantage of the ascending thermal currents.

This death is symbolic, since with this act the condor returns to the nest, to the mountains, from where it is reborn towards a new cycle, a new life.
  • The CONDOR symbolized strength, intelligence and exaltation. It was an animal respected by all those who lived in the Andes since times before the discovery of America, since it not only brought good and bad omens, but it was also responsible for the sun to rise every morning, because with its energy it was able to take the star and raise it over the mountains initiating the life cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions about Trekking in Arequipa

The visit to the Yanahuara Viewpoint usually lasts approximately one hour. From there, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the three majestic volcanoes that surround Arequipa: Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu, as well as the beautiful countryside with its terraced fields.

Traditional dances and village exploration in Pinchollo, Maca, Achoma, and Yanque are generally scheduled for the morning at specific times in the itinerary. Therefore, you will have the opportunity to witness these activities at designated times.

The Colca Canyon region is located at an altitude of approximately 3,600 meters above sea level. It is important to take precautions against altitude sickness, such as drinking plenty of water and resting adequately.

Altitude sickness is a condition that can be experienced during trekking in Arequipa due to rapid exposure to high altitudes. Symptoms may include headaches, dizziness, nausea, and difficulty breathing. To prevent it:

  • Acclimatization: Spend time in Arequipa or at lower altitudes before your trek to allow your body to gradually adapt.
  • Hydration: Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration, which can worsen symptoms.
  • Nutrition: Consume light meals and avoid excessive alcohol and fatty foods.
  • Gradual ascent: Plan routes that ascend gradually rather than ascending quickly.
  • Medication: Consult a doctor for medications like acetazolamide that can prevent or alleviate symptoms.
  • Rest: If you experience symptoms, rest and, if necessary, descend to lower altitudes.
  • Listen to your body: Communicate symptoms to your guide and fellow trekkers. Prevention and care are essential for a safe trekking experience in Arequipa.

In the Colca Valley, adventure enthusiasts will find a rugged natural environment with stunning landscapes that offer exciting challenges. Here, you can participate in various activities, such as hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, fishing, canoeing, excursions with llamas as porters, observation of local flora and fauna, exploration of geysers and waterfalls, as well as visits to prehistoric sites and archaeological areas.

During the day, it is advisable to wear light clothing in the Colca Canyon, but bring a jacket or coat for the cold nights. For visits between December and March, when there are rains, it is advisable to wear thermal and waterproof clothing along with athletic shoes. Additionally, quality sunscreen and a hat should be worn to protect against the sun.

The most recommended currency for covering additional expenses during trekking in Arequipa is the Peruvian Sol (PEN), the local currency. Although most accommodations, shops, and restaurants in Arequipa accept US dollars based on the prevailing exchange rate (Soles per US Dollar), some places also accept Euros.

The ideal season is between April and May. During these months, the rains decrease, and the lush landscapes become even more captivating. However, it is possible to visit in other times of the year as long as you follow the climate recommendations of the region.
