Frequently Asked Questions about the Cusco Tour in Your Hands

The City Tour in Cusco is a traditional journey that includes visits to the city of Cusco and four significant ruins. We begin with a visit to the impressive Cusco Cathedral, where an Inca precinct lies at its foundations. Then, we explore Qoricancha and continue by bus to the Archaeological Centers of Sacsayhuamán, Qenqo, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay.

Machu Picchu is an ancient Andean Inca settlement located in the Eastern Cordillera of southern Peru, at an altitude of 2,430 meters above sea level. It is believed to have been one of the retreat residences of Pachacutec, the ninth Inca of Tahuantinsuyo between 1438 and 1470. This architectural and engineering masterpiece has become one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations and is considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Moray: Moray is a fascinating archaeological site featuring a series of circular agricultural terraces built by the Incas. These terraces are arranged on various levels, creating a sort of agricultural amphitheater. What makes Moray special is its design, which allows for significant variations in climate and temperature conditions on each level. This is because each terrace has a slightly different elevation.

Maras: Maras is known for its salt pans, which are a collection of evaporation pools used for salt production. This place is unique due to its natural origin and continuous use over centuries.

The choice of the best time to take the tour through Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, Moray, and Maras in Peru depends on your personal preferences and the climate factors that suit you best. Below, I provide information on the two main seasons in the region and their characteristics so you can make an informed decision:

Dry Season (May to October):

  • Weather: During these months, the region experiences its dry season, meaning sunny days and cooler nights. Days are typically clear and suitable for outdoor activities like hikes and visits to archaeological sites.
  • Advantages: The weather conditions are generally more stable, reducing the chances of rain and bad weather. This is especially important if you plan to trek Machu Picchu or hike in the Sacred Valley.
  • Disadvantages: The dry season is also the busiest and most touristy, meaning there will be more visitors at archaeological sites and at Machu Picchu. Additionally, prices may be higher during this period due to demand.

Rainy Season (November to April):

  • Weather: During the rainy season, the region experiences frequent rainfall, especially in December and January. Days are cloudier and more humid, and temperatures can be cooler.
  • Advantages: Fewer tourists visit the region during the rainy season, so you might enjoy archaeological sites and attractions with fewer crowds. Additionally, prices for accommodations and tours tend to be lower.
  • Disadvantages: Rainfall can affect visibility and accessibility to archaeological sites, and some hiking routes may be closed due to weather conditions. Furthermore, you need to be prepared for the possibility of rain and cooler temperatures.

The Sacred Valley of the Incas is a region rich in rivers, archaeological monuments, and indigenous villages. Here, you’ll find beautiful colonial towns that reflect the blend of cultures in their architecture, art, and daily life. Highlights include Chinchero with its weavers, Pisac with its craft market, Urubamba and its cosmopolitan ambiance, and Ollantaytambo with its fortress and the Inca town still inhabited there.
