With the Manu Parrots and Macaw Tour or “Manu Collpa and Trails Tours”, you can enjoy one of the most extensive tropical parks in South America. Located in the south-eastern region of Peru, nestled in the last Andean foothills of the department of Cusco and the jungle of Madre de Dios. This tourist destination of Manu is a natural paradise recognized by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve; it is home to the greatest biological diversity in protected areas of rainforest and several endemic species of cloud forest.

It is one of the most biodiverse regions in the world. In Manu it is possible to find all the variety of ecological floors that exist in the Amazon and this makes it one of the most appreciated protected areas.

The number of plant species is very high, in a single hectare there are up to 250 varieties of trees. The aguajal forests are one of the most outstanding ecosystems, where the aguaje and huasaí palms are the dominant ones and develop on areas that are almost permanently flooded, especially on the right bank of the Manu River. It also highlights the presence of cedar, cético, tornillo, chestnut, Lupuna and jebe.

On your trip to Manu you will see the largest mammals, the otorongo, the tiger, the sachavaca, the huangana, the sajino, the deer, the ashy deer, the river wolf, the ronsoco, the coto monkey, the black maquisapa, choro monkey, the white machin monkey and the black machin monkey. It is estimated that there are about 30 million species, more than 1,300 species of butterflies, 136 species of dragonflies, at least 300 species of ants (more than 40 species were found in a single tree) and more than 650 species of beetles.

The bird species found in Manu represent 25% of all known birds in South America and 10% of all species in the world and it is thought that there may be more than 1,000 bird species in total. It is estimated that there are more than 100 species of bats. There are also 77 species of amphibians.

Species known to be globally threatened that are found in Manu are: the choro monkey, the emperor, giant otter, anteater, giant armadillo, ocelot, Andean cat, jaguar Panthera onca, small eared fox, bush dog, spectacled bear, crocodile and black caiman. The fish species identified are: paco, red tail shad, boquichico, mullet and mullet.

The best time to visit Manu is during Cusco’s dry season, from May to October, when we can avoid the most rainy days. During the rainy season, especially January and February, the fall of water increases the flow of rivers, which often block the roads and greatly hinder the transfers.

  • It is a clay wall next to the river where multiple species of parrots come every morning to supplement their diet with the minerals they find here.  This generates a natural spectacle of sounds and colors that bird lovers and nature enthusiasts will not want to miss.
  • Parrot clay lick tours typically begin shortly before dawn, when the first parrots approach the clay lick area, usually in pairs as they call to each other, and then land in the trees around the clay lick. It is understood that they perch on the highest branches while waiting for the rest of the parrots to check for predators in the area.
  • We will see different species of parrots such as the blue-headed parrot, white-eyed parakeet and possibly the Maracano macaw, among others, come down every morning to extract clay necessary for their dietary balance.
  • At the end of this daily activity we return to our lodge Erika for our farewell breakfast and to pack and sail by boat to the port of Atalaya, where the bus awaits us to take us back.
