Description Manu Cultural Zone Tour

With the “Manu Cultural Zone Tour”, you will be able to enjoy one of the most extensive tropical parks in South America. Located in the south-eastern region of Peru, nestled in the last Andean foothills of the department of Cusco and the jungle of Madre de Dios. This natural paradise recognized by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve, is home to the greatest biological diversity in protected areas of rainforest and several endemic species of cloud forest.

In your trip to Manu it is possible to find all the variety of ecological floors that exist in the Amazon and this makes it one of the most appreciated protected areas.

The Manu Tourist destination is one of the most biodiverse regions in the world. The number of plant species is very high, in a single hectare there are up to 250 varieties of trees. The aguajal forests are one of the most outstanding ecosystems, where the aguaje and huasaí palms are the dominant ones and develop on almost permanently flooded areas, especially on the right bank of the Manu River. There is also the presence of cedar, cético, tornillo, chestnut, Lupuna and jebe.

Among the large mammals are the otorongo, the tiger, the sachavaca, the huangana, the sajino, the deer, the ashy deer, the river wolf, the ronsoco, the coto monkey, the black maquisapa, the choro monkey, the white and the black machin monkey. It is estimated that there are about 30 million species, more than 1,300 species of butterflies, 136 species of dragonflies, at least 300 species of ants (more than 40 species were found in a single tree) and more than 650 species of beetles.

The bird species found in Manu represent 25% of all known birds in South America and 10% of all species in the world and it is thought that there may be more than 1,000 bird species in total. It is estimated that there are more than 100 species of bats. There are also 77 species of amphibians.

Species known to be globally threatened that are found in Manu are: the choro monkey, the emperor, giant otter, anteater, giant armadillo, ocelot, Andean cat, jaguar Panthera onca, small eared fox, bush dog, spectacled bear, crocodile and black caiman. The fish species identified are: paco, red tail shad, boquichico, mullet and mullet.

The best time to visit Manu is during Cusco’s dry season, from May to October, when we can avoid the most rainy days. During the rainy season, especially January and February, the fall of water increases the flow of rivers, which often block the roads and greatly hinder the transfers.

  • Activity at Manu’s parrot clay licks typically begins shortly before dawn, when the first parrots approach the clay lick area, usually in pairs as they call to each other, and then land in the trees around the clay lick. It is understood that they perch on the highest branches while waiting for the rest of the parrots to check for predators in the area.

Frequently Asked Questions about Manu Cultural Tour

The ‘Manu Cultural Zone Tour’ is located in the Southeastern region of Peru, in the Andean foothills of Cusco and the rainforest of Madre de Dios. It is special because it is nestled within a UNESCO-recognized Biosphere Reserve and harbors immense biodiversity.

The climate in Manu varies with altitude. In the Manu Park itself, temperatures range between 24°C and 35°C. In high mountain areas, it is cold, while in the cloud forest, it is temperate and humid. In the lowland rainforest, the climate is tropical, with a rainy season from November to March and a dry season from May to October. The choice of season depends on your preferences and activities.

The best time to visit Manu is during the dry season of Cusco, which runs from May to October. This helps avoid most rainy days and facilitates transportation.

During the tour, you can enjoy activities such as bird watching, canoeing, jungle walks, observing sajinos (peccaries), night walks, and visits to parrot clay licks.

Experiencing altitude sickness in Manu is not common because most tourist activities are conducted at lower altitudes, below 2,500 meters above sea level. However, in high mountain areas, altitude sickness symptoms may arise if you are not acclimatized. It is recommended to acclimatize gradually before ascending to higher altitudes and follow acclimatization guidelines. In general, altitude sickness is not usually a problem for most visitors to Manu.

Visiting Manu is generally safe, but like any trip to natural and remote areas, it is important to take precautions and follow safety recommendations. Here are some considerations to ensure a safe visit to Manu:

  1. Reliable tour agency: Choose an experienced travel agency.
  2. Vaccinations and first-aid kit: Consult a doctor and bring vaccinations and a first-aid kit.
  3. Safety in transportation: Ensure vehicles and boats are safe.
  4. Acclimatization: If visiting high-altitude areas, acclimatize gradually.
  5. Respect for nature: Follow conservation rules.
  6. Appropriate gear: Bring suitable clothing and equipment.
  7. Communication: Inform someone trustworthy of your itinerary.
  8. Follow the guide’s instructions.

It is advisable to receive certain vaccinations before visiting Manu due to its location in a jungle area. Some recommended vaccines include yellow fever, tetanus, diphtheria, hepatitis A and B, typhoid fever, and possibly rabies. Consult a doctor or travel clinic for specific recommendations based on your health situation and current conditions. Yellow fever is especially important, and in some cases, it may be mandatory to enter the region.
