The tourist destination of Manu is located in the South-Eastern region of Peru, in the final foothills of the Andes in the department of Cusco and the jungle of Madre de Dios.
The best time to travel to Manu is during the dry season of Cusco, which runs from May to October, to avoid most rainy days and enjoy more favorable weather.
In Manu, you can observe a wide variety of wildlife, including mammals like the jaguar, the tiger, the tapir, and a great diversity of birds, butterflies, reptiles, and more.
The climate in Manu varies with altitude. In the Manu Park itself, temperatures range between 24°C and 35°C. In high mountain areas, it is cold, while in the cloud forest, it is temperate and humid. In the lowland rainforest, the climate is tropical, with a rainy season from November to March and a dry season from May to October. The choice of season depends on your preferences and activities.
Altitude sickness is not common in Manu since most tourist activities are carried out at lower altitudes, below 2,500 meters above sea level. However, in high mountain areas, you may experience symptoms of altitude sickness if you are not acclimatized. It is recommended to acclimatize gradually before ascending to higher altitudes and follow acclimatization guidelines. In general, altitude sickness is not a common problem for most visitors to Manu.
It is advisable to get certain vaccines before visiting Manu due to its location in a jungle area. Some recommended vaccines include yellow fever, tetanus, diphtheria, hepatitis A and B, typhoid fever, and possibly rabies. Consult a doctor or travel clinic for specific recommendations based on your health situation and current conditions. Yellow fever is especially important and, in some cases, may be mandatory for entry into the region.
Visiting Manu is generally safe, but like any trip to natural and remote areas, it is important to take precautions and follow safety recommendations. Here are some considerations to ensure a safe visit to Manu:
Drinking water directly from rivers in the Manu jungle without prior treatment is not advisable due to the risk of gastrointestinal diseases. It is recommended to carry bottled or treated water, such as tablets or filters. Most tours and lodges provide safe water. Drinking treated or bottled water is the safest option.
