UROS, are a group of artificial islets built with totora, an aquatic plant that grows wild on the shores of Lake Titicaca. Its inhabitants, the Uros, are a population of very ancient origin that currently resides in Peru, near the bay of Puno.
These floating islands can be raised and lowered following the level of the lake, and their inhabitants can also lift their anchors and move them as if they were barges. Each island houses from three to ten families and the size of the land is proportional to the families to be accommodated. Located at a distance of 7 km from the city of Puno, at an altitude of 3,812 meters above sea level.
TAQUILE belongs to the district of Amantani, Puno, Peru and is located 45 km from the regional capital. It has a population of approximately 2,200 inhabitants. The main village is located at 3,950 meters above sea level and the highest point of the island reaches 4,050 meters above sea level. The island belongs to the linguistic domain of the Quechua language and its inhabitants are called taquileño/a.
It was part of the Inca Empire, to this day you can see some archaeological remains. This island was one of the last Peruvian towns that capitulated to the Spanish in the XVI century. Later it was taken in the name of Emperor Charles V and finally passed to the court of Pedro Gonzales de Taquila, from whose surname its name is derived today.
The Spaniards prohibited the traditional Inca dress, so the islanders had to adopt the peasant dress that they still wear today. It is narrow and long, and was used as a prison during the Spanish Colony. In 1970 it became the property of the Taquile people, who have inhabited the island ever since.
