The ancient trail laid out by the Incas from the start of the Inca Jungle trek to Machu Picchu, winds up and down and around the mountains over two high Andean passes on the route, which collectively have led to the route being named the ‘Inca Jungle Trail to Machu Picchu. The views of snow-capped mountain peaks, distant rivers and mountain ranges and orchid cloud forests are stupendous and walking along a cliff-hugging pre-Columbian ruin is a mystical and unforgettable experience.

TOUR SUMMARY

INCA JUNGLE TO MACHU PICCHU:

  • Day 1: Cusco – Abra Malaga (Bike) – Santa Maria 55 Km – Moderate Day.
  • Day 2: Lucmabamba (Trek)- Llactapata (Inca Trail) – Aguas Calientes: 18 km – Moderate day.
  • Day 3: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco: 4 km – Easy day.

DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: Cusco – Abra Malaga – Santa Maria

  • 05.30 hrs Pick up time from your hotel. We will leave the city of Cusco and head towards the Sacred Valley of the Incas, here we will have time to have breakfast.
  • We will board the transportation and continue to Abra Malaga (4,350 meters) starting point of our bike tour. After a brief explanation to help you get oriented, the guide will provide us with the necessary equipment for the activity.
  • We will begin the descent by bike for 3 hours and 30 minutes, 55 km until we reach Huamanmarca. During the trip we will experience the beauty of the snow-capped mountains and the tropical forest, we will cross small streams and enjoy the change from cold to tropical climate.
  • During the trip, we will stop several times to check the bikes and equipment. We will arrive at the village of Santa Maria (1,200 masl) where we will have lunch and spend the first night in a hotel. In the afternoon we have the option of canoeing on the Vilcanota River. This river offers category III and V+ rapids. For this activity we will provide you with helmets, windbreakers and category V life jackets. This activity is available from April to December and you must know how to swim to participate according to Peruvian law.

Day 2: Santa María – Llactapata – Aguas Calientes

  • After a hearty breakfast, we will zipline “We run in the air over the Andean mountains”. This activity lasts approximately two hours or we head uphill for 2-3 hours to the Llactapata Pass (2,736 m), where we will encounter a spectacular view of the Machu Picchu Sanctuary from the southeast, a view that few travelers have the opportunity to admire.
  • We take a short break to explore the ruins of Llactapata, which have recently been restored. We arrive at Hidroeléctrica “Estación del pueblo”, we will continue walking next to the railroad until we reach Aguas Calientes or Machupicchu village (walking time 3h approx.).
  • Upon arrival at the hotel we will rest and take a bath, later we will have the celebration dinner with our guide and a last briefing for our experience the next day which is to visit Machu Picchu.

Note: if you wish to take the train from Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes 40 minutes ride, you must buy the ticket in Santa Teresa or Hidroelectrica (the price is not included in the tour) and coordinate with the guide one night before. You will meet the rest of the group at the train station in Aguas Calientes.

Day 3: Aguas Calientes – Machupicchu – Cusco.

  • 05.00 hrs Very early after breakfast, we will take the bus to make the tour to Machu Picchu. This is the most important day because today we will visit one of the seven wonders of the world, we will appreciate the sunrise in the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.
  • Once inside Machu Picchu, we will have a guided tour of 2h, we will see its most important temples, such as the Temple of the Sun, Temple of the 3 Windows, etc.. Afterwards we will have free time to explore Machu Picchu on our own.
  • If you booked in advance, Huayna Picchu mountain (2,800 meters) or Machu Picchu mountain (3,082 meters) will have that opportunity after your guided tour. You must make reservations to climb either mountain three months in advance for an additional cost of US$ 20.
  • Once you have finished enjoying Machu Picchu, you will return to the town of Aguas Calientes walking or booking previously the bus up and down to Machu Picchu and controlling the train schedule to be 30 min. before to board it and get to Ollantaytambo and return in our private mobility to Cusco.

Note: If you plan to hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountain you must make reservations in advance and the fee is US$ 20. Space is limited to only 400 people per day.
