Frequently Asked Questions about the Wonderful Cusco Tour

The best season for a tour of Cusco and its surroundings, such as the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, is generally considered the dry season, which runs from May to September. During these months, the weather in the region is more stable and enjoyable for travelers.

Machu Picchu is an ancient Andean Inca settlement located in the Eastern Cordillera of southern Peru, at an altitude of 2,430 meters above sea level. It is believed to have been one of the retreat residences of Pachacutec, the ninth Inca of Tahuantinsuyo between 1438 and 1470. This masterpiece of architecture and engineering has become one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations and is considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Moray: Moray is a fascinating archaeological site featuring a series of circular agricultural terraces built by the Incas. These terraces are arranged on various levels, creating a kind of agricultural amphitheater. What makes Moray special is its design, which allows for significant variations in climate and temperature conditions on each level. This is because each terrace has a slightly different elevation.

Maras: Maras is known for its salt pans, which are a collection of evaporation pools used for salt production. This place is unique due to its natural origin and continuous use over centuries.

Ollantaytambo is an ancient Inca city located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, in Peru. It is one of the most important and well-preserved archaeological sites of the Inca Empire and played a significant role in terms of both architecture and history.

Ollantaytambo was built during the reign of the Inca emperor Pachacútec in the 15th century. It served as a major military fortress, a ceremonial center, and a resting place for Inca nobility. The city witnessed one of the last major battles between the Incas and the Spanish conquistadors in 1537, known as the Battle of Ollantaytambo.

The Sacred Valley of the Incas is a region rich in rivers, archaeological monuments, and indigenous villages. Here, you’ll find beautiful colonial towns that reflect the blend of cultures in their architecture, art, and daily life. Highlights include Chinchero with its weavers, Pisac with its craft market, Urubamba and its cosmopolitan atmosphere, and Ollantaytambo with its fortress and the Inca town still inhabited there.

The word “Pisac” has its origins in the Quechua language, which is the ancestral language of the Incas and is still spoken in some regions of Peru and other Andean countries. In Quechua, “Pisac” is derived from the word “P’isaq,” which can have various meanings, but it is commonly translated as “bird”.

It is important to be well-prepared and carry essential items, such as:

  • Appropriate clothing: The Cusco region can have unexpected weather changes, so bring layered clothing that you can add or remove as needed. Include a waterproof or windproof jacket, comfortable hiking pants, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and thermal underwear if you plan to visit Machu Picchu.
  • Comfortable shoes: A sturdy and comfortable pair of walking shoes is essential, especially if you plan to hike on uneven terrain.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses: The altitude and proximity to the equator make sun exposure strong. Carry broad-spectrum sunscreen and sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes.
  • Hat or cap and scarf: A hat or cap will protect you from the sun, and a scarf can be useful for keeping warm at high altitudes.
  • Water bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial in the Cusco region due to the altitude. Carry a reusable water bottle to refill during the day.
  • Small backpack: A lightweight backpack is handy for carrying your belongings, such as water, snacks, sunscreen, and a jacket.
  • Cash: In some places, especially local markets, credit cards may not be accepted, so it’s important to carry enough local currency, the Peruvian sol.
  • Documentation: Make sure to carry a copy of your passport, visa, and any other important documents in a sealed bag to protect them from moisture.
