TOUR UROS, are a group of artificial islands built with totora, an aquatic plant that grows wild on the shores of Lake Titicaca. On your visit to Uros you will see its inhabitants, the Uros, who are a population of very ancient origin that currently resides in Peru, near the bay of Puno.
These floating islands can be raised and lowered following the level of the lake, and their inhabitants can also lift their anchors and move them as if they were barges. Each island houses from three to ten families and the size of the land is proportional to the families to be accommodated. Located at a distance of 7 km from the city of Puno, at an altitude of 3,812 meters above sea level.
TAQUILE belongs to the district of Amantani, Puno, Peru and is located 45 km from the regional capital. It has a population of approximately 2,200 inhabitants. The main village is located at 3,950 masl and the highest point of the island reaches 4,050 masl. The island belongs to the linguistic domain of the Quechua language and its inhabitants are called “taquileño/a”. Taquile is part of the Uros Island Tourism Puno.
It was part of the Inca Empire, to this day you can still see some archaeological remains. This island was one of the last Peruvian towns that capitulated to the Spaniards in the XVI century. Later it was taken in the name of Emperor Charles V and finally passed to the court of Pedro Gonzales de Taquila, from whose surname its name is derived today.
SILLUSTANI, is an ancient cemetery where you can see a series of impressive tombs belonging to the Qolla culture, which developed in the northern part of the lagoon, in the town known as Hatunqolla. These tombs are located on the shores of the Umayo lagoon, in the city of Puno, the archaeological complex stands out for its gigantic “chullpas” (kind of stone towers), built by collas and Incas, to bury their dead.
