With the “Chullpas de Sillustani Puno Tour”, you can visit the largest necropolis in the world. The Chullpas of Sillustani are located on a peninsula that is introduced into the blue waters of the Umayo lagoon, at 4000 meters above sea level. This beautiful altiplanic lagoon is fed by the Chaullamayo River to the southwest and the Ccacaccapunco River to the north, with a maximum depth of approximately 14 m. It is connected to Lake Titicaca through the Illpa River.
Sillustani was a cemetery that belonged to the Kolla culture (1200 AD – 1450 AD) and then to the Inca empire. The about 90 tombs that we found, known by the name of chullpas, are built of stone, almost perfectly shod, which are shaped like inverted cone trunks. The corpses of the highest Kolla authorities, before being placed in the chullpas, were mummified in the fetal position. Next to the mummy they placed a great part of their belongings, in many cases they were objects carved in gold and silver, ceramic utensils and food, because they believed that after death they would be resurrected elsewhere and they wanted to make sure that nothing was missing.
These sacred Chullpas of Sillustani, many of them reach 12 meters high, have an entrance always directed towards the east that served for the deceased to communicate directly with the Sun God. This entrance is quite small, so it is believed that the funeral bundle or mummy was first introduced into the vault and then it was closed. Apparently, nobles, rulers and priests were buried in Sillustani. The upper part of the most modern chullpas, those that belonged to the Inca period, are adorned with large cornices. Some of the stones present figures in low relief that represent mainly lizards and snakes.
