Since ancient Inca times, the spectacular peak of Mount Salkantay, crowned by a glacier, has been considered sacred and protective of the local people and their crops.

The name Salkantay or Salcantay is a Quechua word meaning invincible, wild or savage. For this reason, the Salkantay is often called “Wild Mountain”.

It is the highest peak of the Cordillera Vilcabamba, which is part of the Andes Mountains, and rises to 6270 meters above sea level. Salkantay is located less than 80 kilometers from the city of Cusco.
