With the “Ananiso Trek Tour”, you can enjoy an excellent option to escape from the congested routes like the traditional Inca Trail and hike in the Ananiso Canyon, which is located 124 kilometers south of the city of Cusco, this canyon rests at an altitude of 4,200 meters above sea level. It has a length of 3 km and a depth of 150 m, where the Ananiso River crosses. You can enjoy the variety of flora and fauna inside the canyon and one of the most amazing landscapes.

THE ANANISO CANYON (3,800 – 4,200 masl) is located 24 km from the district of Pitumarca, in Cusco. It is 150 meters deep and is one of the natural wonders that have been formed since the Tertiary era, clear evidence of the rain erosion of millions of years. In this sector you can observe llamas, alpacas, wild deer, vizcachas and birds, you can also do high altitude fishing, hiking, camping, rock climbing.

It consists of a narrow pass cut between two mountains, which channel the Ananiso river belonging to the Pitumarca river basin. It has a great diversity of landscapes, you can see the snow-capped Ausangate and cave paintings across the river Llamapampa.

DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: Cusco – Pitumarca – Tinki – Ananiso Canyon – Cusco

  • 04.00 hrs We will pass by your hotel to pick you up, we will travel south of Cusco, travel time 3 hours, on the route we will pass through Quiquijana and Cusipata and valleys.
  • 05.15 hrs We will arrive to Pitumarca (3,600 masl), we will make a brief stop to stretch our legs, then we will board the transport and continue for 1 h. 30 min.
  • We will see rural villages and people of these towns in their daily life, Inca remains and in the distance the imposing snowy Ausangate and the red valley.
  • The first impression of the canyon will show us the true strength of the Earth’s core, as if it had split in two. Deep crevasses that extend form this crust of unparalleled beauty opening the way as we advance to the community of Ananiso (4,400 meters above sea level).
  • At this point, we will see the impressive Ananiso Canyon, take some pictures and start walking along a narrow path for 1 h 30 min. until we reach the masked waterfall.
  • On the way back we will visit the ancient indigenous cave paintings discovered in 1947, with designs of llamas, alpacas, vizcachas and eagles of the pre-Inca groups kanas and kanchis who probably were the ones who left these designs hunting animals with simple weapons, made of stone and collecting plants or fruits.
  • Lunch will be served in the community of Ananiso and then return to Cusco.
  • 18.30 hrs Arrival to the city of Cusco, we will leave you near the main square.
