The INTI RAYMI was the most important of the four festivals celebrated in Cusco, according to the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. It indicated the beginning of the year, as well as the mythical origin of the Inca. It lasted nine days during which dances and sacrifices were performed. The last Inti Raymi that counted with the presence of the Inca emperor took place in 1535.
On the night of the eve, all the fires in Tahuantinsuyo were extinguished. In the great Huacaypata square (today Plaza de Armas of Cusco) all the characters of the empire were concentrated. In the shadows, the crowd waited with great respect for the appearance of the god Inti (sun). Generals, princes and all the nobility waited in deep silence, many of them disguised as wild beasts and other animals of the Andean mythology. They expressed their recognition and worshipped him as the supreme, sole and universal god, who with his light and virtue created and sustained all things on earth. Likewise, they thanked him for the harvests received during the year.
The INCA, with the help of the priests, “induced” the god Inti (sun) to return with the favor of his rays to fertilize the earth and ensure the welfare of the children of the great empire of Tahuantinsuyo. The sacred fire was renewed with a concave gold bracelet that was placed against the sunlight, whose reflections were projected on a piece of very carmenado cotton that caught fire in a short space. The sacred fire was taken to the Qoricancha, where it would be conserved by the acllas.
During the ceremony, the sacrifice of a flame was also performed to foretell the coming year. Then a great military march would follow and at the end everyone would retire and burst into unrestrained merriment for several days.

Inti Raymi is an ancient Inca festival that celebrates the winter solstice in the southern hemisphere and the beginning of the new year in the Andean calendar. The word “Inti” means “sun” in Quechua, and “Raymi” translates to “celebration” or “festival.” Therefore, Inti Raymi is commonly known as the “Festival of the Sun.”
Inti Raymi was the most important festival in Cusco during the Inca Empire. It marked the beginning of the year and was related to the god of the sun, Inti. The last Inti Raymi with the presence of the Inca emperor was held in 1535.
During the ceremony, invocations to the sun god are performed, historical reenactments take place, military marches are conducted, and alpacas are sacrificed to predict the coming year. It is a celebration full of symbolism and tradition.
Inti Raymi, the Festival of the Sun in Cusco, is celebrated at various stages throughout the day. These are the main stages where the representations and ceremonies of this festival take place:
Inti Raymi is celebrated on June 24th of each year in the city of Cusco, Peru. This date coincides with the winter solstice in the southern hemisphere and is a highly significant festival marking the beginning of the Andean New Year. During this celebration, various ceremonies and reenactments are conducted in honor of the sun god, as was done in the time of the Inca Empire.
Yes, part of the Inti Raymi ceremony is conducted in Quechua, the ancestral language of the Incas and many indigenous communities in the Andes. During the festival, actors and priests participating in the reenactment often use Quechua to recite prayers and perform invocations, following ancestral traditions.
Generally, no special documents are required to attend the Inti Raymi celebration in Cusco. However, it’s important to consider some recommendations:
Yes, taking photographs and recording videos is generally allowed during Inti Raymi. However, it’s important to be respectful of the staff’s instructions and not disrupt ongoing ceremonies.
